Perspective is interesting...Have you ever been climbing up a steep hill and looked down at the ground? It tends to appear flat. I discovered this today while getting a bit of quick exercise. It was a long tedious hill, and without barely going any distance up it I was already tired. The height of the hill, combined with the grade and the distant horizon of it's brow against the sky was psyching me out. I looked down for a moment and realized the ground looked flat. I decided to focus on that and trick my psyche into believing I wasn't actually climbing a steep hill. Interesting response. My stride lengthened and my breathing slowed and deepened. That hill was at least 50% easier because I kept my eyes on the ground directly in front of my feet.
How like life this is...If I focus on how far I have to go, how far I am from completion of any given thing, I'm psyched out, I'm tired, I'm even exhausted...If I focus on the moment, the next step, one foot in front of the other, I'm really only noticing the exertion of the moment. With more energy I reach the top without as many rests and with energy to spare.
A head bowed down doesn't hurt either. A bowed head is an indicator of humility. No, I'm not talking about "door mat-ism", simply a little less of the dose of narcissism we North Americans are generally born with. A little less of "all about me" and a bit more of...again...the simple moment, whatever that may be.
